Erik Cavazos is a music educator from San Antonio, Texas and most recently served as a Teaching Fellow at the University of North Texas. As a Teaching Fellow, Mr. Cavazos taught orchestra methods to undergraduate music education majors and supervised orchestra student teachers as they completed their clinical teaching in preparation of becoming a certified teacher in Texas. Prior to this appointment, he served as the Head Orchestra Director at Alamo Heights High School.
Throughout Mr. Cavazos’s time as a teacher, he has made contributions to the field of music education in multiple capacities. He has served on the Education Committee for the Classical Music Institute (CMI), was a conductor with the Youth Orchestras of San Antonio (YOSA) and was the founding director of the UTSA Guitar and Orchestra camp. His contributions and networking allowed camp participation to more than double within the first year of existence.
As a teacher, Mr. Cavazos’s orchestras have consistently received sweepstakes awards at UIL Concert and Sightreading Evaluations, Best in Class and Overall Outstanding Orchestras at Director's choice music festivals, and had numerous students participate in TMEA region orchestra, Solo and Ensemble Contest, Texas State Solo and Ensemble Contest, and TMEA All-State Orchestras. Additionally, Mr. Cavazos was named the Texas Orchestra Directors Association 2022 Young Orchestra Director of the Year.
Professional affiliations include Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA), American String Teachers Association (ASTA), Texas Orchestra Directors Association (TODA), and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Music Fraternity.
